From the flat cap to the baseball cap
In 1920, German immigrant Ehrhardt Koch founded the company in Buffalo, New York, which a year later was named New Era. In the first year, 60,000 flat caps were produced. His son Harold bet on baseball: in 1934 the Cleveland Indians became the first MLB team with caps from New Era, and in 1954 the 59FIFTY followed. Since 1994, the caps worn on the field in the MLB have come exclusively from New Era.
How the cap entered streetwear
In 1996, director Spike Lee had a custom Yankees cap made for himself. According to New Era, this brought the 59FIFTY to the top of streetwear. Caps with the Yankees' NY or the Dodgers' LA are still classics today.
