Vans
Vans: Vans started in 1966 in Anaheim, California, and became an icon of skate culture with flat, vulcanized shoes and its distinctive waffle sole. At Coziness, you'll mainly find the LX models: Authentic, Old Skool and Classic Slip-On in the premium version.
Since 1966: from deck shoe to skate shoe
On March 16, 1966, Paul and Jim Van Doren, together with Gordon Lee and Serge Delia, opened the Van Doren Rubber Company. It all began with the Style 44, a deck shoe that is now called Authentic. In the early 70s, skaters all across Southern California wore Vans because they appreciated the rugged construction and the grippy sole. In 1977 came the Old Skool (Style 36) with the Sidestripe, which started out as a doodle by Paul Van Doren. Also at the end of the 70s came the Classic Slip-On (Style 98), which the 1982 film "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" made famous in the Checkerboard.
LX: the classics in the premium version
LX appears in the names of the models that Vans itself markets as premium. The number after it is the old style number: 44 for the Authentic, 36 for the Old Skool, 98 for the Classic Slip-On. The shape and proportions stay true to the original, and the waffle sole remains. More on this in the guide to the Vans Authentic 44.
Which Vans suits you?
- Authentic 44: the shape of the Style 44 from 1966, simple and low to the ground.
- Old Skool 36: with Sidestripe, cut a little higher and more padded than the Authentic.
- Classic Slip-On 98: without laces, with elastic side panels, often in the Checkerboard.
- Size: According to Vans, the Old Skool fits true to size; for slightly wider feet, going up a half or full size can be worth it.
What is Vans LX?
Vans LX is the premium line of the Vans classics such as the Authentic 44, Old Skool 36 and Classic Slip-On 98. The models stay true to their originals but, according to Vans, get an improved fit and more cushioning thanks to a Sola-Foam insole.
