The Story of Vans: Off the Wall Since 1966

Vans is more than a shoe brand.
Vans is a cultural movement that, over six decades, has shaped skateboarding, the music scene, and global streetwear culture like few other brands.
What began in 1966 as a small shoe factory in Anaheim, California, is now a worldwide phenomenon with cult status.

The story begins with Paul Van Doren, a Boston native who entered the shoe industry at the age of 14 and rose to vice president at the company Randy's.
Together with his brother James, Gordon Lee, and investor Serge Delia, he opened the Van Doren Rubber Company at 704 East Broadway in Anaheim on March 16, 1966.
The business model was revolutionary at the time: producing shoes directly on-site and selling them to customers without intermediaries.

On opening day, twelve customers came.
There were three shoe models ranging from $2.49 to $4.99, but no finished inventory, only display items.
And Paul Van Doren didn't even have enough change in the till.
So he told his customers to take the shoes and come back the next day to pay.
All twelve returned.
This moment, built on trust rather than contracts, defines the spirit of Vans to this day.

Vans Era, Old Skool, and Sk8 Hi: The Birth of Skate Icons

In the early 1970s, Southern California skateboarders discovered Vans shoes.
The vulcanized rubber sole offered grip on the board that no other shoe at the time could provide. 1976 was the decisive moment: Vans, together with skateboarding legends Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta, developed the Vans Era, model number #95.
With a padded collar and striking color combinations, it was the first shoe explicitly designed for skateboarding.
In the same year, the legendary "Off the Wall" logo debuted, inspired by an exclamation about a daring trick by Tony Alva.

In 1977, the Vans Old Skool followed, internally known as Style #36.
This model changed everything.
One day, Paul Van Doren scribbled a curved line on a piece of paper, originally called the "Jazz Stripe," now known worldwide as the Vans Sidestripe.
The Old Skool was the first Vans skate shoe with leather panels for increased durability and thus became the blueprint for all subsequent models.
A year later, in 1978, the Vans Sk8 Hi was launched: a high-top that protected the ankle during aggressive skating and remains one of the brand's best-selling silhouettes to this day.

Fast Times, Checkerboard, and the Leap into Pop Culture

In 1982, a film set everything in motion.
In "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," Sean Penn's cult character Jeff Spicoli wore Vans Slip-Ons with a Checkerboard pattern.
The black and white checkerboard pattern became a global phenomenon overnight and catapulted Vans from a niche into the mainstream.
The Slip-Ons are still one of Vans' best-selling shoes, and their Checkerboard Pattern is one of the most recognizable patterns in the fashion world.

However, rapid success had its downsides.
Vans expanded into too many product categories simultaneously and filed for bankruptcy in 1984.
Paul Van Doren once again took the helm, completely cut marketing budgets, froze salaries, and focused on the core business.
Three years later, Vans had emerged from the $12 million bankruptcy, an achievement that underscores the brand's fighting spirit.

Vans Warped Tour, Supreme, and Cultural Expansion

In the 1990s, Vans solidified its role as a link between sport and culture.
In 1996, the brand became the main sponsor of the Vans Warped Tour, one of the most influential music festivals in the punk, emo, and alternative scene, which ran until 2019 and will resume in 2025.
In parallel, Vans opened its own skateparks and sponsored the Triple Crown of Skateboarding.
The connection to Supreme, one of the most important streetwear partnerships ever, began with a series of co-branded Old Skool models and continues to this day.

In 2004, Vans was acquired by VF Corporation, the parent company of The North Face and Timberland, for $396 million.
Under this umbrella, Vans continued to grow and, in 2011, became the first skateboard-rooted company to exceed one billion dollars in annual revenue.

Vans Knu Skool, OTW, and the Present

In the present, Vans proves that six decades of history are no obstacle to relevance.
The Vans Knu Skool, a bulkier, padded reinterpretation of the Old Skool, has become one of the most sought-after sneakers on the market in record time.
With the new OTW by Vans line, led by Ian Ginoza, the brand is focusing on more experimental silhouettes and higher-quality materials for a design-conscious audience.
Collaborations with artists, designers, and cultural figures keep Vans constantly visible in the contemporary fashion world.
