The History of Clarks Originals: British Craftsmanship Meets Global Subculture

Clarks Originals is one of the most influential footwear brands in cultural history.
What began in 1825 as a small shoe factory in Somerset, England, has evolved over nearly two centuries into a global phenomenon whose silhouettes have shaped subcultures, accompanied music genres, and blurred the lines between classic craftsmanship and urban culture.

The Originals line traces back to a single moment of inspiration.
In 1944, Nathan Clark, a member of the founding family, noticed the boots worn by officers in the Sahara during his service in the British Army: simple suede shoes with a crepe sole, plain and functional.
Convinced that this style had potential, he developed the Desert Boot from it, which was launched in 1950.
Two eyelets, a two-piece construction, and the characteristic natural rubber crepe sole: a shoe of radical simplicity that permanently changed the footwear world.

Wallabee and Desert Trek: Icons with their own Identity

In 1967, the Wallabee followed, inspired by a German moccasin design from the Sioux brand.
With its distinctive moccasin construction, two eyelets, and wedge-shaped crepe sole, the Wallabee quickly became a cult shoe that resonated far beyond its original target audience.
In 1972, the Desert Trek was added, designed by Lance Clark, featuring its characteristic central seam and the iconic Trek Man emblem on the heel.

From Kingston to Brooklyn: Clarks in Music Culture

The true power of Clarks Originals lies in cultural adaptation.
In Jamaica, the Desert Boot became the unofficial uniform shoe of the Rude Boys in Kingston from the 1960s onwards.
Dancehall legends wore Clarks as a status symbol, people saved for months for a pair, and Vybz Kartel's song "Clarks" sparked a whole new wave of enthusiasm in the early 2010s.
Simultaneously, the Hip Hop scene in New York adopted the Wallabee as their shoe.
Ghostface Killah referred to himself as "Wallabee Kingpin," Notorious BIG and Slick Rick wore them regularly, and the Wu Tang Clan's connection to Clarks was cemented in 2019 with an official collaboration for the 25th anniversary of 36 Chambers.

Collaborations and Materials

In the fashion world, Clarks Originals has bridged the gap between heritage and contemporary design with Supreme, Stüssy, BAPE, Aimé Leon Dore, Moncler, Salehe Bembury, Ronnie Fieg, and many other partners.
The combination of natural materials, beeswax-treated leather, buttery soft suede, and the durable crepe sole makes every Clarks Original a shoe that matures with time and develops character.

Clarks Originals at Coziness

At Coziness, we stock Clarks Originals because few brands stand so authentically at the intersection of craftsmanship and street culture.
A Wallabee or Desert Boot is not a trend.
It is a piece of cultural history that you wear on your feet.
