Founded in 1982 by Mike Graham in his garage in Ventura, California, the brand's roots are deeply embedded in American climbing culture.

The Stonemasters and the Invention of the G Pants

In the 1970s, a group of young, free-spirited climbers known as the Stonemasters had settled in Yosemite National Park.
They revolutionized climbing with a focus on speed and style, coining the term "free climbing." Mike Graham, a member of the Stonemasters, was bothered by the uncomfortable clothing worn for climbing at the time.
So he designed his own shorts: with a diamond-shaped gusseted crotch, inspired by Kung Fu pants, for full 180-degree freedom of movement.
An integrated nylon belt that could be adjusted with one hand was also added.
These innovations fundamentally changed outdoor apparel.

The name Gramicci comes from a nickname Graham received when the Stonemasters attempted the first "purely Italian" ascent of the legendary Half Dome.
Although none of them were Italian, they gave themselves Italian-sounding names.
Graham became Gramicci.

From the Climbing Scene to Streetwear Icon

The same features that made Gramicci's pants indispensable on the rock face – durability, freedom of movement, relaxed fit – also appealed to surfers and skaters.
In the early 1990s, Gramicci became a cult brand in the burgeoning streetwear scene.

Collaborations with Stüssy, nonnative, mastermind JAPAN, and Deus Ex Machina underscore its cultural relevance.
The Running Man, the hand-drawn logo of a climber, has become a symbol for clothing built for movement, no matter where.
